The Massachusetts Legislature has approved a bill that will take away time-and-a-half pay for retail workers on Sundays and holidays, in spite of the rallies and demonstrations, and the phone calls that deluged the offices of the Senate President and the Speaker of the House. Apparently the needs of the working people of this state, and the fact that so many rely on those extra dollars, meant nothing to these legislators who were more concerned with the wishes of the Retail Association, with their deep pockets and their blackmail threats to roll back the state sales tax.
Union workers whose time-and-a-half pay is guaranteed by their contracts can take a breath, but only for the moment. Once those contracts expire and it's time to renegotiate them, you can bet your paycheck that your employer will try to use the repeal of time-and-a-half to justify removing it from your contract! We need to fight TOGETHER and fight like HELL to make sure that doesn't happen, and to elect proworker representatives who will take seriously the concerns of working people and bring back Sunday and holiday time-and-a-half for ALL workers and their families!
Local 1445 was TOTALLY opposed to this bill. Why? For the simple fact that WE UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT TIME-AND-A-HALF IS TO ALL RETAIL WORKERS! We DO believe in raising the minimum wage and in providing paid medical and family leave to workers; these are important issues for all of us and deserve our support. But once the repeal of time-and-a-half was included in this bill, thanks to the Retail Association, Local 1445 shouted, "NO WAY!" We cannot and will not support any bill that cuts our members' paychecks, no matter how many other ancilliary benefits might be included! It's as simple as that.
