But why should I care? Wal-Mart engages in some of the worst labor practices in the country: paying its employees substandard wages, forcing unpaid overtime on its workers, and refusing to provide affordable health insurance. (And let's not forget the discrimination suits currently pending…) So? Sure, it's cheap to shop at Wal-Mart, but at what cost? Wal-Mart brings you its rock bottom prices by underpaying employees and forcing its suppliers to do the same. And when big box Wal-Mart comes to town, local businesses that treat their employees better can't compete and are forced out of business. And your point is...? Who do you think ends up paying when Wal-Mart employees need help with the cost of basic needs,
such as food, rent, utilities? YOU - THE TAXPAYER! In fact, according to NOW (the National Organization for Women), "Wal-Mart's average national wage is less than $10 an hour, putting many of its employees below the poverty line. Recently, California Assemblywoman Sally J. Lieber, D-San Jose, revealed that Wal-Mart is fully aware that its employees qualify for welfare, so much so that the store has provided information for its employees on how to apply for public assistance." (For the full story, see www.now.org/issues/wfw/110303walmart.html.) Are you willing to subsidize a company that underpays and mistreats its workers, In the final analysis, shopping at Wal-mart costs you MUCH, MUCH more than you could ever save at the Wal-Mart register. Join the millions of people who are not fooled by Wal-Mart's low-price propaganda - take the pledge and tell Wal-Mart that until it changes its ways, you will take your holiday shopping to other stores and will urge your friends and family to do the same. | |||
